Cataract surgery
Cataracts
This visual defect is characterized by opacification of the crystalline lens, a natural lens in the eye, located behind the iris.
Patients with cataracts are generally over the age of 65.
In some cases, cataracts appear earlier due to other illnesses or poor lifestyle habits.
- Symptoms: blurred or hazy vision, double vision and/or color changes
- Causes: hereditary, diabetes, high myopia and/or eye trauma
Treatment
Cataract surgery
Cataract surgery involves replacing the clouded crystalline lens with an artificial lens, also known as an intraocular implant.
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at the Hôpital Intercantonal de la Broye.
- Important choice of implant to correct pre-existing visual defects.
- Choice of premium, fully customized implants to correct refractive anomalies.
Treatments
Intraocular implants
Multifocal implants
These Premium implants correct both distance and near vision (presbyopia), and are indicated for patients without astigmatism.

The ophthalmologist will check that you have no contraindications to surgery and answer any questions you may have.
The type of implant will be determined during this examination.
Lens removal (natural lens)
Under local anaesthetic, your opacified lens is fragmented and removed from your eye.
Implant placement (artificial lens)
The implant chosen during the pre-operative examination is then inserted, replacing your opacified lens.

FAQ
A few quick answers to any questions you may have.
What are the symptoms of cataracts?
Symptoms include a progressive decline in distance vision. This can lead to visual fog, double vision, glare and reduced color vision. The phenomenon is similar to dirty glazing. Cataracts are a natural aging process of the crystalline lens.
How is cataract treated?
The only treatment is surgery. It requires the insertion of an intraocular implant, an artificial lens, to replace the opacified crystalline lens.
Are there any side effects following cataract surgery?
In the months following the operation, vision may become less clear. The capsule of the crystalline sac, preserved to house the intraocular implant, also becomes opaque. This is a normal sequel, known as secondary cataract, and is common in younger patients.
